The Grand Hotel Birmingham

In 1875, Isaac Horton and his architect, Thomson Plevins, began work on a 100-bedroom hotel on the corner of Colmore Row and Church Street: The Grand Hotel Birmingham opened some four years later, on 1 February 1879. Further additions and extensions were made over the following 15 years, chief among them the Louis XIV-style ballroom.

For the whole of the 20th century, The Grand Hotel was a Birmingham landmark, and for the best part of that time a byword for luxury and civic pride. Since 2002, the hotel has been closed but now – following a £45 million restoration and refurbishment of the spectacular, Grade 2* listed building – The Grand Hotel re-opened in May 2021.

Postal Address: 1 Church Street, Birmingham, B3 2FE

Grand in scale and extraordinary in detail, the Grand Ballroom is a showstopper of a room, and sure to leave a lasting impression.

Built in 1898 and originally known as the Grosvenor Room, the Grand Ballroom is an architectural and engineering masterpiece: almost 30m (100ft) long and 10m (32ft) high, it is decorated with ornate plasterwork, elegant cartouches and original, Art Deco “electroliers” (electric chandeliers).
